Greenwich Over-50s: Private Personal Training Just Up the Hill in Blackheath

If you're looking for a personal trainer for over-50s in Greenwich, here's the honest starting point: our studio isn't in Greenwich itself. It's just up the hill in Blackheath village, two minutes' walk from Blackheath station. From Greenwich it's a short bus ride or drive, or a walk up through Greenwich Park and across the heath.

What you'll find there is a completely private studio: one client, one coach, no members and no one watching. Our Fitness for 50+ programme is built around strength, mobility, balance and confidence for your 50s, 60s and beyond, whatever your starting level. Many of our over-50s clients hadn't set foot in a gym for decades before their first session, and your first 30 minutes are free.

Is it too late to start strength training at 60?

No. Strength tends to fade when we stop using it, and the loss shows up in ordinary places: the stairs, the shopping bags, how sure you feel on uneven ground. Age isn't a barrier, though. With proper coaching, progressive resistance training is one of the best things you can do for bone density, joint health, balance and independence.

Our beginner's guide to strength training over 50 covers the why and the how in depth, so this piece sticks to where to start if you live in Greenwich. One caveat either way: if you have a health condition or haven't exercised in years, speak to your GP before you begin.

How often should over-50s lift weights?

There's no single right number, and at the start it matters far less than turning up consistently. Most of our clients train with us one to three times a week, and if you also walk in the park or swim, your plan covers those days too.

The principle is to start small. Starting where you are usually means chair squats, supported movements and light dumbbells, with loads rising only when your technique and your joints are ready. We coach technique closely and progress loads carefully, and every exercise is adapted to your abilities.

Personal trainer, chain gym or gentle class? Choosing as an over-50 in Greenwich

If you live in Greenwich you have plenty of choice, and different options genuinely suit different people. Our honest comparison of local gyms goes into the detail; in short:

  • Budget chain gyms: long opening hours and plenty of kit for a low monthly fee. The trade-off is that nobody checks your technique or adjusts your programme, and peak times are busy.
  • Leisure centres: a gym alongside pools and classes. If swimming is what you enjoy, that's the right call.
  • Gentle and seated classes: community groups and charities often run sociable, low-key sessions for older adults. A good way to get active, though usually not progressive strength training.
  • A private 1-to-1 studio like ours in Blackheath village: the middle ground. Real strength training with a coach beside you on every set, without the crowd, the noise or the feeling of being in someone else's space.

Why a private studio suits people who feel out of place in big gyms

For many people in their 50s and 60s, the hardest part of training isn't the exercise but walking onto a busy gym floor. Our studio has no mirrors full of twenty-somethings, no music you can't hear yourself think over, and nobody watching. Sessions run one client (or one couple) at a time, so the squat rack, smith machine, cable pulley system, Monster G9 rig, assault bike, rower, free weights and kettlebells are yours for the whole session.

Every session is also coached, not supervised: your coach is on the floor beside you, watching your form on each rep and adjusting the load as you go. That's the real difference from a membership, which sells you access to the equipment and leaves the rest to you.

What over-50s and over-60s training looks like with KD

The first session is a conversation and a gentle movement check, not a test. From there your programme builds gradually, with enough challenge to keep progress coming without leaving you wrecked for two days. KD is founded and led by Karolina Desiatnikova, a degree-qualified personal trainer who has coached Blackheath locals since 2016, including adults over 50 rebuilding strength. If you're training around an old injury, we work alongside your GP or physiotherapist's advice, never instead of it.

Depending on what you tell us, the aims of our over-50s personal training usually include:

  • Mobility and flexibility you'll notice on the stairs and in the garden
  • Strength in the muscles that protect your joints
  • Better balance and stability, and more confidence on your feet
  • Supporting bone density through progressive resistance training
  • Confidence and independence in everyday life

For women in midlife: perimenopause, menopause and strength

For many women, the years around 50 overlap with perimenopause or menopause, and the old advice to eat less and do more cardio tends to backfire. Our perimenopause training is strength-led instead: building muscle to support your metabolism, protecting bone health with progressive resistance work, strengthening the core and pelvic floor, and keeping intensity at a level that manages stress rather than adding to it.

Everyone is different and we'll never promise outcomes, but we will build the plan around how you actually feel from week to week, including the weeks when sleep and energy don't cooperate. For medical concerns, always speak to your GP.

Getting to Blackheath village from Greenwich

Greenwich Park adjoins the heath, so on a fine day you can walk up through the park and across the heath into the village. Otherwise, buses run through the village from Greenwich, and there's on-street parking nearby if you'd rather drive. From most nearby areas the trip is 10 to 20 minutes door to door.

We're on the first floor of 5 Lee Road, Blackheath, London SE3 9RQ. If access is a concern, mention it when you get in touch and we'll talk it through. Full directions are on our find us page, and we've also written about training in Blackheath when you live in Greenwich, Lewisham or Lee.
